เป็นเนื้อเยื่อชั้นผิวนอกสุด เจริญเปลี่ยนแปลงมาจากเนื้อเยื่อเจริญ protoderm ประกอบด้วย เซลล์ที่เรียงตัวชิดกันแน่น จนไม่มีช่องว่างระหว่างเซลล์ช่วยป้องกันเนื้อเยื่อที่อยู่ภายใน ชั้นนอกมี สารคิวทินซึ่งเป็นสารจ า  สเกลอเรงคิมาแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ชนิด ตามรูปร่าง คือ 1 ไฟเบอร์ fiber เป็นเซลล์ที่มีรูปร่างหลายเหลี่ยมและยาว อยู่รวมกันเป็นกลุ่ม พบในพืชที่ให้เส้นใยต่างๆ เช่น  1 เซลล์พาเรงคิมา Parenchyma เป็นเซลล์ชนิดเดียวกับที่อยู่ในชั้นคอร์เทกซ์และพิธ Pith คือชั้นที่อยู่ใจกลางของรากพืชใบเลี้ยงเดี่ยว เป็นเซลล์ที่อ่อนนุ่มผนังบาง อมน้ำได้ดี ทำหน้าที่สะสมอาหารพวกแป้ง เซลล์พา  2 2 คอลเลงคิมา collenchyma เป็นกลุ่มเซลล์ที่มีผนังหนาไม่สม่ำเสมอ ทำหน้าที่ให้ ความแข็งแรงกับพืช เซลล์มีรูปร่างยาวอยู่ชิดกัน พบมากบริเวณใต้ชั้นเอพิเดอร์มิส ก้านใบ ในรากไม่ค่อยพบ  สเคลอเรนไคมา sclerenchyma เป็นเซลล์พืชที่มีผนังเซลล์ชั้นที่สอง พบตามบริเวณที่เป็นเนื้อแข็งๆของพืช เช่น เปลือกหรือเนื้อไม้ที่สาก เสี้ยนในเนื้อผลไม้ แบ่งได้เป็นสองชนิดคือ แบบที่รูปร่างยาว ปลายแหลม เรียก
